What kind of dog would you be? Dogs are descended from an ancient type of wolf and were domesticated by humans approximately 15,000 years ago. This means that pet dogs are older than agriculture and civilization! However, early dogs didn't have as luxurious a life as their descendants. Ancient dogs were expected to work. They helped our ancestors hunt game, raised the alarm when enemies or predators were near and took advantage of our hearth fires. In some cases, they even helped carry goods using small sleds called travoises.

The American Kennel Club recognizes over 100 unique, specific breeds of dogs. These breeds are divided into various groups, depending on their historical place in human society. Some breeds have died out, while others are newly arrived. Of course, the world is full of mixed-breed dogs, also called mutts, who are just as intelligent and adorable as their certified-breed counterparts. Approximately one in four households have at least one dog as a pet.

Fun Facts

Have you ever noticed how dogs seem to vary the most between species? A Chihuahua, Great Dane and Basset Hound are all dogs, but look very different from each other. This is because dogs have double the number of genes for each physical feature as humans. So, while you might have a pair of genes dictating how tall you grow or the color of your hair, a dog would have four pairs of genes for the same attribute!

Perhaps the most famous dog in the world is Snoopy, the beagle belonging to Charlie Brown in the Peanuts comic strip. Snoopy spent much of his time in a red doghouse and had a yellow canary best friend named Woodstock. Peanuts ran every day for fifty years, and many strips featured Snoopy in whole or in part. He's the most well-known for the single frame strip stating simply, Happiness is a warm puppy.
