Fun Facts

Many famous people are color blind. Eddie Redmayne the actor, Mr. Rogers the children’s TV host and Neil Young the musician are all color blind. So is Rod Stewart, and he was a professional wallpaper designer before becoming a musician. US Attorney General Merrick Garland is so colorblind that he keeps a list of which ties go with which suits so he never goes to work looking ridiculous. Taj Burrow only became a world famous surfer because his color blindness kept him from becoming a pilot.

People have three different types of cone cells in their eyes. Each one senses either red, green or blue. Color blindness comes from mutations or damage in one or more of these types of cone cells. People missing one type can have a hard time telling certain colors apart. People missing two types can only see a few colors. People missing all three can’t see any color. There's also a rare condition that causes the eye to develop a fourth type of cone cell, allowing for much richer color discrimination, kind of the opposite of color blindness.
