The Transformers are a sentient robotic race from the planet Cybertron. Split into two main factions, the Autobots and Decepticons, the Transformers have been warring against each other in space since ancient times. Since its conception, the Transformers stories have been adapted and reimagined as various television series, comic books, toys and games. Most people are familiar with the Transformers through the most recent live-action film series, beginning in 2007 with Transformers and featuring shocking special effects and action-packed battles to save Earth.

The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, are in constant conflict with the Decepticons, likewise led by Megatron, over their now-destroyed home planet Cybertron. While Megatron despises humans and aims to conquer Earth, Optimus Prime fights to protect his human friends and create a Transformer-human harmonized planet. Beyond the noble Autobots and the power-hungry Decepticons, there are many more mysterious Transformers with secret plans and dangerous motives. Which Transformer are you most like? Fun Facts

The Transformers were born when Hasbro, hoping to compete with popular 1980s toys like He-Man, created car-transforming robots. To help promote sales, Hasbro partnered with Marvel Comics to create backstories and comics. This would lead to many different Transformers toys as characters were killed off and created, more comic books, movies and many spin-off television series. The Transformers would even show up in other Marvel comic books, such as when they teamed up with Spider-Man and starred alongside Nick Fury.

The Transformers live-action film was the first of its kind and had a budget of $160 million. Even so, director Michael Bay wasn’t able to include nearly as many Transformers as he originally wanted due to budget constraints. Many of the cars used in the films were modified, such as replacing the back-end of Ratchet’s hummer H2 with a large cage. Reportedly, General Motors also delivered numerous hollowed vehicles for the film to use for car-trashing action scenes. This is consistent with Michael Bay’s policy to limit CGI effects. Except for the robots themselves, all action shots are created with cranes and cables. If you watch Transformers: Dark of the Moon, however, you might notice a reused scene from Bay’s The Island.
