The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first launched as a comic in 1983 and was designed to appeal to a more adult audience. The first comics were quite violent, but after the ninja reptiles became popular, the creators had to make the turtles more heroic and likable. The turtles live in a sewer in New York and fight crime with their highly skilled ninja abilities and are known for their unique catchphrases, such as cowabunga and turtle power.

Each of the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles specializes in a type of martial arts weaponry, and their distinct personalities make them quite relatable to fans. The turtles are easy to identify based on their uniquely colored bandanas and standout personality traits. Michelangelo is the funny one, Raphael is the fiery turtle, Donatello is the calm, techy one and Leonardo is the mature leader. Take this quiz to find out which turtle you're most like.

Fun Facts

When the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first took the world by storm, some believed the word ninja was too violent. As a result, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, they became the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. In early cartoons and movies, Michelangelo's nunchucks were cut because the weapon was banned in the United Kingdom. Children across the UK and Europe grew up referring to the turtles as heroes because of the desire to curtail violence in children's television.

Did you know that there was meant to be a fifth turtle originally? The much-hated Venus de Milo who appeared in a live-action TV show was going to be a ninja turtle called Kirby, but it didn't happen. Not much has been said about the planned fifth turtle, and it's now just a trivia fact known only die-hard fans. However, in 2019, a fifth turtle called Jennika was introduced to the comics after she saved Splinter's life.
