Carl Macek was the person most responsible for the development of anime’s English-speaking fandom. He adapted many classic anime series' for American audiences in the '80s, with very loose dubs, radical changes from the original story lines and, in some cases, combining footage from multiple series to make his own show. Today, a series that has been dubbed with the same freewheeling, highly creative approach is said to have been “Macekred.” Although often mocked today, he is also respected for having made the modern English-speaking anime fandom possible.

Quirks of Japanese trademark law mean that musicians can often make more money on the music they make for a soundtrack than music made for a music studio. Anime, therefore, tends to have higher quality music made by famous musicians. Anime soundtrack albums can sell rather well.
