Can You Name These Pokemon? Beginning in 1996 with Pokemon Green and Pokemon Red, Pokemon is one of the most well-known and successful franchises in the world. The franchise started with two games and evolved to contain over 100 video games, a television show, several movies, a card game and volumes of manga. The most recent additions to the mainline Pokemon roster, Pokemon Sword and Shield, introduced the franchise's eighth generation of adorable and powerful creatures.

One of the most alluring things about Pokemon is the creatures themselves. To date, over 800 Pokemon have been introduced, ranging from dream-haunting ghosts to sentient trash bags. In addition to the hundreds of regular Pokemon out there, there are dozens of Legendary and Mythical ones with the power to grant wishes and create worlds. Take this quiz to find out how many of these Pokemon you can name!

Fun Facts

Did you know that a lot of the names in the Pokemon universe have not-so-hidden meanings? Pokemon itself is short for "pocket monsters." Pikachu directly translates to "sparkly mouse noise." Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee, two fighting-type Pokemon, were named after two of the most famous fighters in history, Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. Some of the snake Pokemon, namely Ekans and Arbok, are snake and cobra spelled backwards.

There are a few Pokemon that have very surprising facts about their size and weight! One of the largest Pokemon in the franchise is Wailord. It measures 14.5 meters in length, but it only weighs 398 kilograms. This means its BMI is 1.9, which is about 10 percent of a human's BMI. At the other end of the spectrum, one of the smallest Pokemon is Cosmoem, measuring 0.1 meters in height. Cosmeom's weight, however, is 999.9 kilograms!
