Pikachu is a friendly and powerful electric-type Pokémon, easily recognizable by his ruddy cheeks and lightning bolt-shaped tail. He stores electrical energy in those cheeks and recharges when asleep. His superpower is static, which means he creates a surge of electricity during battle, causing the paralysis of his opponents. Charmander is loyal and feisty and has a flaming tail that mirrors his moods. The tail blazes when he's angry, and he creates a ring of fire during battle.
Fun Facts
Although largely thought of as being male because of the gender of trainer Ash's Pikachu, there are also females Pikachus. Females have a dent in their tail toward the end along with a slight heart shape. In the earlier generations of Pokémon, there weren't as many clear-cut differences. Charmanders are widely considered to be male and don't have any identifying features that would indicate otherwise.
Although Pikachu is the unofficial mascot for Pokémon, he was never assigned this role. It was actually decided that Clefairy would take center stage as the official mascot for the franchise. When Pokémon was launched, the masses were quickly drawn to the vibrant yellow creature. In the older generations of Pokémon, Charmander could be used as a starter and not Pikachu. In the new Pokémon Go, Pikachu can be used as a starter.
