Think you might have BPD? Try our self-test and see if you have BPD. Borderline personality disorder, also called BPD, is a commonly misunderstood mental health diagnosis. Someone with BPD may struggle to regulate their emotions and may make harmful decisions due to these extreme feelings. They may also rely heavily on their relationships with other people for emotional validation. A fear of abandonment is a defining symptom of BPD, and those with the disorder may go to great lengths to avoid losing people. However, they may turn on a friend just as quickly.

People with BPD may find extensive talk therapy with a trained psychotherapist offers a helpful way to manage their condition. Overcoming BPD typically involves becoming more socially aware and emotionally resilient, which may require extensive work with a therapist or doctor.

Fun Facts

Rachel Bloom's four-season TV show, "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," features a main character largely based on Bloom's own mental health struggles who suffers from BPD. Rebecca Bunch doesn't get her diagnosis until halfway through the show, and the narrative demonstrates how someone with untreated BPD can hurt themselves and others. Mental health professionals have praised "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" for its compassionate and humanizing treatment of people living with mental illness. And the songs are pretty great, too!

Along with Rebecca Bunch, many fictional characters have been depicted as having borderline personality disorder. "Girl, Interrupted," both the novel and film, are based on the author's experience of being diagnosed with BPD in the 1960s. And while she's much less kind than Rebecca Bunch, the character of Livia Soprano on "The Sopranos" shows the havoc someone with lifelong untreated BPD can wreak on the lives of those around them.
