Have you ever wondered where the world Kwami came from? Bandai first created the idea. The word itself literally translates from Japanese to English to mean "a small kami." In Japanese, the word kami is often used to refer to either a God or a specific type of spiritual being. This means Kwami translates to mean "a small God or spiritual being."

The creator of Miraculous Ladybug, Thomas Astruc, said many of the original Kwamis were inspired by the Chinese zodiac signs. These differ from the Roman zodiac signs often used in the eastern parts of the world. Astruc said he did this because he wanted the rest of the world to become more familiar with some of the defining features of Chinese culture.
