My Hero Academia got its start as a weekly publication in the Japanese manga Shonen Jump on July 7th, 2014. After a very successful year of production in Japan, it was announced that the story would be translated into English. As of January of 2021, My Hero Academia has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Currently, My Hero Academia is the sixth most popular manga in both the American and Japanese markets.
My Hero Academia was created by and is written by Kohei Hirokishi. A graduate of the Nagoya University of Arts and former assistant to Yasuki Tanaka, Kohei always wanted to write manga. Drawing inspiration from his favorite mangas (Naruto, One Piece, Akira, Tekkinkinkreet, and Boys on the Run) along with ideas and thoughts taken from his childhood, Kohei wrote My Hero Academia. In November of 2015, Kohei asked his many Twitter followers to think of and submit new ideas for different Quirks, some of which eventually became popular additions to the manga.
