My Hero Academia, also known as Boku no Hiro Akademia, is a superhero manga that was written and illustrated by Kohei Horikoshi. The manga started in 2014, with the anime following close behind in 2016. It follows the story of Izuku Midoriya, a child born without powers in a world where most people are superheros. He's chosen by one of the most prominent superheroes in the world, All Might, to be his successor.

A lot of the My Hero Academia anime focuses on Izuku's experiences learning to use his newfound abilities while at U.A. High School. It also follows his friends and companions, Shoto Todoroki and Katsuki Bakugo. As the anime progresses, the true threat to the students and the world is revealed, a power-hungry villain by the name All for One who has a personal grudge against All Might and Izuku.

Fun Facts

Did you know that the heroes in the My Hero Academia series are heavily influenced by mainstream heroes in American media? The author of the series is a huge fan of American superhero comics, such as Spider-Man and X-Men. The influence is also seen in the names of All Might's and Izuku's attackers, which include Detroit Smash, Colorado Smash and the United States of Smash!

There are multiple meanings to the nickname given to Izuku in the My Hero Academia series, Deku. His friend and bully, Bakugo, calls him that because it means "useless." In the English-dubbed anime, however, it's meant to be an abbreviation for the term "Defenseless Izuku." Another friend of Izuku's, Ochaco, chooses to believe it comes from the word "dekiru," which means "to be able to do."
