TriviaThe lightsaber is one of the most iconic images in the Star Wars franchise. Which lightsaber are you? Which lightsaber would you use? It makes a hauntingly eerie sizzle when ignited and can strike down a foe instantly. One of the coolest things about lightsabers is all the different colors they come in. Darth Vader's was red, and the first lightsaber Luke Skywalker held was blue. Yoda used a green one — maybe he liked how it matched his skin color.
According to Star Wars lore, a lightsaber traditionally gets its color from a Kyber crystal. The crystals have no color at first, but they develop a hue once they're found by a Jedi. That color can be influenced by the personality of the lightsaber's owner. What color would your lightsaber be? Purple is one of the rarest lightsaber colors in the Star Wars universe. In the movies, only Jedi Mace Windu wields a purple lightsaber. Windu is played by Samuel Jackson, and the way he describes it, he got a purple lightsaber because he asked for a purple lightsaber. Initially, George Lucas argued that lightsabers only came in red, green or blue. But in the end, Jackson got his way and says having the only purple lightsaber makes it easier to spot his character in big battle scenes.
When Kylo Ren's character was introduced to the franchise in The Force Awakens, his crossguard lightsaber turned a lot of heads. According to Star Wars canon, it was blue when his Uncle Luke was training him to be a Jedi, but after he turned to the dark side, he modified it to make it red. The new version contained a cracked Kyber crystal, which required it to have vents on both sides of the hilt to divert excess heat.
