Game of Thrones ran from 2011 to 2019, to wide popular and critical acclaim. The high fantasy series tells a story of a nation torn apart by civil war, dispossessed royals attempting to reclaim their throne and looming environmental catastrophe. The series has 73 episodes in total, spread over eight seasons. It received 160 Emmy nominations, taking home awards 59 times, including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Series and numerous awards for costume and set design.
If you're a fan of Game of Thrones, you may have wondered which Game of Thrones house you would fit into! The core conflict of the story deals with the politics and warfare between the Great Houses of Westeros. Each house was once a kingdom in its own right, before being united (some say conquered) by Aegon Targaryen and his dragons. As a result, Westeros is often called the Seven Kingdoms. Each House has its own ancestral territory, including sworn bannermen, along with allies and enemies that change over the course of the season. The two most prominent families are the Lannisters and Starks.
Fun Facts
One of the series' enduring mysteries is Jon Snow's parentage. Though the books never explicitly reveal who Jon's parents are, savvy readers figured out very quickly that honorable Ned Stark never would have sired a child out of wedlock. The theory that Jon was the child of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, called also "R + L = J" was long a fan favorite. Reportedly, when showrunners Benoff & Weiss pitched the show to George R. R. Martin, their knowledge of this theory secured them the rights.
One of the series most memorable villains is the boy king Joffrey Baratheon, played by Irish actor Jack Gleeson. You might also recognize Gleeson from his role in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008). Gleeson found the role challenging, especially scenes in which his character had to torture Sophie Turner's Sansa Stark. Joffrey turned out to be the actor's final role. After his character died of poison at his own wedding, Gleeson left television to pursue a stage career.
